Human Gene Therapy Essay -- Genetics Science Biology Essays

Human Gene Therapy Imagine this, you have just married your college sweetheart this past summer. You have now been happily married for over a year and you find out that the two of you are going to be parents. So as the typical soon to be mom and dad so commonly do, the two of you start going to the doctor for checkups to make sure the pregnancy is running smoothly. Early in the pregnancy you hear the worst, your baby has a fatal disease. The two of you are terribly heart broken over the situation. You tell your doctor that abortion is out of the question because you do not believe in it. On the other hand the doctor hits you with the question, "What about gene therapy?" Unfortunately you and your spouse look dumbfounded at each other because you have no idea what the doctor just said. So, what exactly is Human Gene Therapy? Well, in the next couple of pages I am going to cover some of the basic ideas of human gene therapy, discuss some of the public debates, and wrap things up with my personal opinion. Gene therapy is basically genotypic pharmacology. This involves the use of factors which modify the genetic composition of a given cell or group of cells. As a result of the idea for human gene therapy, a new technique of treatment for many human diseases has been developed. The factors that contribute to the treatments are either gene products, or are capable of interacting with gene products, or have the ability to interact with gene products in an individual cell or a group of cells. The interactions of contributing factors to gene therapy success are extremely capable of regulating particular genes, which either directly or indirectly, leads to the cure of a disease. As a result of this interaction an eventual cure of th... ...e lifespan and population. So, I am going to leave you with these few words. Maybe the human race should be thankful for what we currently have and the limited time we have left on earth. To me a basketball game with no final whistle would have no meaning. So would immortality. References Rehmann-Sutter, Christoph "The Ethics of Human Gene Therapy." The Hastings Center Report, May 1999, v.29, 3, 43 Begley, Sharon. "Designer Babies. Police Brutality: Raw Unfinished

Police Brutality, is not only an American issue, it is a world-wide problem. Police brutality has been going on since the late 1800's and is getting worse every year. Police brutality is caused by so many things, race, boredom, power insecurity, life problems. The same reasons we get angry in life, but they chose to abuse people because they are the only gang who can get away with it. Police is the largest gang of all, most organized, and the most manipulative. In Reynoldsburg, Ohio, A group of police buddies formed their own mirror squad which was named â€Å"S.N.A.T. Squad† This stood for â€Å"Special Nigger Arrest Team† believe it or not it was kept for years. Here is a timeline of important milestones of civil rights be disregarded in the United States. In 1886, Haymarket Square Riot. About 1,300-1,400 people gather in Chicagoà s Haymarket Square to protest police brutality against striking workers that had been exercised the day before. 180 police arrive to disperse the throng. From somewhere a bomb is thrown into the midst of the police. In 1991, when Rodney King was brutalized, for one reason only, the color of his skin. Civilians in the neighborhood caught the whole thing on tape. Brought to court for evidence was the video, and witnesses. With the 99% white jury, it made no differance. The police officer who lead the attack was found not guilty. In 1995, Anibal Carasquillo was shot in the back by police officers in January 1995. His mother, who attended Amnesty's press conference, said, †this kind of killing is happening every month and they' re getting away with it†. In 1998, Six policemen from the North East Rand Dog Unit set their dogs on three suspected illegal immigrants, allowing the animals to attack the three men as the officers shouted racial insults. The incident was caught on video and televised nationally by the South African Broadcasting Corporation on Nov. 7, 2000, causing widespread outrage. All six policemen were ultimately sentenced to jail terms of between four and five years each. In 2008, 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos was shot dead by police officer Epaminondas Korkoneas shortly after 9 p.m. in the Exarcheia district of Athens, Greece for being suspected of resisting arrest. Demonstrations and riots erupted throughout Athens almost immediately after the shooting, sparking weeks of civil unrest and workplace and university occupations throughout Greece and beyond. Analysis Of Viva Cristo Rey ! / Long Live Christ The King !

Viva Cristo Rey! / Long Live Christ the King! In the 1920s the government, was rebelling against the Catholic church in Mexico. The Mexican constitution of 1917 (aka Calle Laws) was enforced by eliminating all the power that the Catholic Church had. Many Priests and innocent people were killed during the war. Since there were countless amounts of people that died defending their faith, lots of saints and martyrs came out of this war. Just how Lindner tried to interfere with the Younger family so they wouldn’t move into the white neighborhood the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) wanted to take part in the war because they were against the Catholic faith. Both the african americans and the catholics were going through a rough time. The Government†¦show more content†¦An example of that was St. Jose Maria Robles Hurtado, his friend had to hang him because that was his duty as a soldier even though it was not the right thing to do. Martyrs and Saints During this time people gave up their lives for the Catholic faith. Some of them have been canonized and others have beatified. One saint that was recently canonized on October 16 of last year is Saint Jose Sanchez del Rio. He was fourteen years old when he died. He was caught by the federalists and locked up in a church that was used as a prison. He was tortured and asked to renounce to his faith, but he refused to. The soles of his feet were sliced and he was made to walk on salt. The soldiers were getting so frustrated and angry at him that they started stabbing him. He was also struck with a machete, with every strike that he took he screamed Viva Cristo Rey. St. jose Maria Robles Hurtado suggested to put a cross in the center of mexico, because it was a violation of the constitution he was hanged by his own friend. He was only able to place a cornerstone and make a ceremony for it before he got killed. Where the corner stone is located now there is a shrine called Cristo Rey and it is on El Cerro del Cubilete in Guanajuato, Mà ©xico. He wanted the shrine to be in the center of the Country which ended up being in the state of Guanajuato. He wanted the cross to show how Mexican people saw Christ; they
